On That Day on the Beach
Words by: Sarah Ong, Grade 12 | Art by: Sydney Heck, Grade 12
Waves wash over the shore;
Pushing and pulling,
Just like we did while playing
That day on the beach.
Do you remember
When we built those sandcastles
With nothing but a shovel,
And a used can,
Thrown out just like us?
We were sure we would never forget
Those days in the sun,
When we ran around and screamed
As we splashed water about,
Ignoring what was coming for us.
But we forgot that Father Time exists.
We forgot that the sun sets;
We forgot that we were only kids;
We forgot that we were left behind.
But still, we played;
We splashed, we ran, we laughed.
Pushing and pulling,
Just like we did while playing
That day on the beach.
Do you remember
When we built those sandcastles
With nothing but a shovel,
And a used can,
Thrown out just like us?
We were sure we would never forget
Those days in the sun,
When we ran around and screamed
As we splashed water about,
Ignoring what was coming for us.
But we forgot that Father Time exists.
We forgot that the sun sets;
We forgot that we were only kids;
We forgot that we were left behind.
But still, we played;
We splashed, we ran, we laughed.
We tried to leave our mark
In the sand,
In the water;
But still, the sun set,
And the waves came and washed us away.
Like we never existed;
Like we never were,
On that day on the beach.
Because as the sun sets,
It’s forgotten
As the moon rises in its place,
And the light in the sky burns out.
Just like our footsteps left in the sand that day,
washed away by the waves of time
To be replaced by the coming tide.
Like we never existed;
Like we never were,
On that day on the beach.
In the sand,
In the water;
But still, the sun set,
And the waves came and washed us away.
Like we never existed;
Like we never were,
On that day on the beach.
Because as the sun sets,
It’s forgotten
As the moon rises in its place,
And the light in the sky burns out.
Just like our footsteps left in the sand that day,
washed away by the waves of time
To be replaced by the coming tide.
Like we never existed;
Like we never were,
On that day on the beach.
